It is impossible not to empathise with the bashful village boy Nemorino (whose aria ‘a furtive tear’ must be one of the most popular tenor arias of all time). He is besotted with the wealthy Adina but she rejects him. His desperation deepens when Adina apparently falls for a handsome man in a uniform. In abject misery he turns to the dreadful and dazzling quack Dr Dulcamara for a love potion…
