Set and filmed in Tanzania, Leanne Welham’s debut feature is both heartwarming and heartwrenching. We follow Pili, a single mother of two, scraping a living from the land. She is HIV-positive; her partner has left her and she is afraid to discuss her illness openly. The only glimmer of hope is to get hold of the money needed to rent a kiosk in the village. But her options become increasingly limited, with an impossible choice having to be made. Using a mainly non-professional cast – many of whom live with HIV/AIDS – and a script drawing on improvisation and interviews with local women, Pili is an honest, authentic view of Tanzanian life.
