At the recent Locarno Festival, Dominga Sotomayor became the first woman to win Best Director for Too Late to Die Young – set in Chile in 1990 after the fall of General Pinochet. Sofia is a 16-year-old living with her father in a commune in the foothills of the Andes, where they hope to escape the city and the politics of their country. She dreams of living with her mother and practises being grown up by chasing older boys and smoking. Gorgeously photographed, with a sensational central performance, the period of hope and anxiety surrounding Pinochet’s departure is evoked in Sotomayor’s ‘stunning tale of growing up in small moments’ – IndieWire.
