DUKES

Dukes stands on Great Pulteney Street, one of the finest boulevards in the Heritage City of Bath. Built over 200 years ago, Dukes comprises of two generously proportioned townhouses and has been engaged as a hotel and guest house for nearly 100 years.

Whether it is the high ceilings, sash windows or hand crafted Sanitan bathroom suites, each of our 17 rooms uniquely reflects on an era of craftsmanship, Georgian elegance and charm.

ABOUT US

Great Pulteney Street was commissioned by Sir William Pulteney and completed in 1789. No.53 and No.54 have served as domestic homes, long term lodgings and as a school. In 1919, the two properties were first combined into a private hotel, St Monica’s. In 1985 the name was changed to Dukes Hotel, in honour of His Grace the Duke of Clevedon.

Dukes operated as a full service hotel through until 2012 when the current owners purchased the property and repositioned these magnificent townhouses as an informal and boutique guest house. Now known more simply as ‘Dukes’ or ‘Dukes of Bath’, the reputation and emphasis on service and unforced hospitality will continue to rest at the heart of this wonderful property.

We provide accommodation in relaxed and comfortable surroundings and our 17 guest rooms include a choice of Standard Doubles, Superior Doubles, Deluxe Doubles or sumptuous Four Poster rooms. Some of our rooms have the option to be twinned and in the larger suites, we can accommodate children on foldaway beds. Please contact us directly if this is required.

Each of our 17 individually styled rooms have hand crafted Sanitan bathroom suites. All of our Standard Doubles have shower only as well as one of our Snug Doubles. All other rooms have shower over bath. We have one room available on the ground floor that is equipped with a walk-in shower that would perhaps be most suitable for a guest with mobility issues.

Our breakfast repertoire is broad and varies with the season; however we are always able to offer you: Local pork sausages, delicious smoked back dry cured bacon, Stornoway black pudding from Scotland, freshly grilled tomatoes and sautéed mushrooms. A selection of these breakfast ingredients may be served with your choice of large soft poached eggs or fried eggs or lightly scrambled as you prefer. Alternatively we offer homemade pancakes with maple syrup, freshly made berry compote and Greek yogurt. We are widely appreciated for our Scottish porridge oats, simmered with a glazing of Scottish whisky and rich brown sugar. Our smoked haddock, smoked salmon and butter grilled kippers are sourced from Kingfisher, Paignton in Devon. For those not wanting a cooked breakfast we offer a breakfast buffet table teasingly loaded with a selection of cereals, muesli and yoghurt, a selection of pastries, toast marmalades and jams. Please inform us of any dietary requirements as we are happy to cater to these.

We have a courtyard garden which is accessed through our bar area on the lower ground floor which can be enjoyed alongside a drink from our bar. We get a generous amount of sun in the courtyard in the early afternoon and towards the evening, it becomes a more cooler and shaded oasis.

Dukes comprises of two Grade 1 Listed Georgian townhouses which has four floors. Our bar and breakfast room are located on the lower ground floor and our rooms are spread between the ground and third floor (top). For many years the benefit of introducing a lift has been discussed and considered, unfortunately our Grade 1 listing is now rather restrictive and so each floor is only accessed via 2 flights of stairs (6 flights to the top). We will not hesitate to help carry your luggage, however we welcome your patience and consideration.

Although we do not have the use of parking permits anymore owing to the council having withdrawn them for all hotels and guests houses in the centre of Bath, we do have a couple of nearby off street options and would be happy to pass these on. Please contact us for more information if you are planning to come by car.

All of our rooms are non-smoking.

Children of all ages are welcome. We have a number of rooms that can accommodate a foldaway bed for children. Please telephone to enquire about prices and availability. We are also able to provide cots as an additional extra or you're more than welcome to bring your own.

If we do not contact you by return, we would ask that you assume that we have not received your message.

For all cancellations there is a £15 administration fee.
