A veritable rural retreat, Fishermen’s Retreat is an award winning haven of calm where you can totally escape from the bustle of Bath and relax in the beautiful Midford Valley beside the Midford Brook.
ABOUT FISHERMEN’S RETREAT
ACCOMMODATION
One of a rank of 4 cottages built for the Somerset Coal Canal workers in the late 1800s and renovated today to 4 Star standard and has now been awarded a Gold Star for exceptional accommodation and welcome.
Sleeping facilities are on the first floor with a king size luxury 1400 pocket sprung bed in the master bedroom with crisp Egyptian cotton linen and a small overnight guest room. There is also a sofabed in the sitting room. With the original fireplace and wood burning stove the sitting room is very welcoming and comfortable. There is also a pine dining table for 4 in the window alcove so you can watch the birds feeding as you eat. This is more like a home than a holiday cottage.
Just outside the front door there is a small private patio with table and chairs where you can pop out for a quick cup of coffee and admire the roses.
Fishermen’s Retreat has a south facing mature garden leading down to the Midford brook where there is a stone built barbecue on the brookside patio. There is nothing more enjoyable than relaxing with a glass of wine while your cook is at work! Wildlife abounds here with a variety of birds..kingfishers, warblers, heron, cormorants all frequent visitors, preying on the local trout.
AROUND AND ABOUT
The Brook is a fishery stocked by the Avon Anglers and day tickets can be purchased for fly fishing. Need to be organised in advance.
Alternatively, you can enjoy the many walks and cycle rides around: Sustrans 24 is just above the cottage and you are not be more than 300 yards along the road from the famous Two Tunnel Cycle way into Bath.
The Kennet and Avon Canal path also provides excellent cycling opportunities and you can cycle one way i to Bath and the other to Bradford on Avon and Devizes.
Wild swimming is available at Warleigh Weir and Farleigh Hungerford, 2-4 miles away

MEDIA FACILITIES
There is free Wifi throughout the cottage and a flat screen TV in the sitting room. An iPod Docking station is also provided. There is a selection of DVDs, a variety of books as well as some board games.

Free private parking space for one car is provided and a second by arrangement

There are two apartments in the city centre, The Old Smithy Loft and No 2 Hedgemead Court, and two other cottages Brooks’ View and Tucking Mill View just 12 minutes drive away at Tucking Mill, Midford, a historic hamlet just outside the city boundaries in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Media facilities include free Wifi throughout, iPod charger, DVD player, flatscreen TV downstairs. Lovely local walks and cycle rides being on Sustrans 24. Wild swimming at Warleigh Weir and Farleigh Hungerford Historic area being the home of William Smith, the father of English Geology.

Deli and co-op on Combe Down (10 mins by car) or Tesco Express and Sainsburys just off the Frome Road (10 mins away)
Wheelwrights in Monkton combe and the Hope and Anchor in Midford, both independent gastro pubs and the Packhorse in South Stoke, a very popular community owned pub
William Smith, the Father of English Geology, lived in one of the houses in Tucking Mill. Simon Winchester wrote the Map that changed the World about Smith’s original work in this field which even today is used as the geological basis for surveys. Examples of the strata are to be found on the Sustrans cycle path just behind the cottage. Ann can provide further info in interested.
There is a lovely reservoir also on the other side..do wander there and see the bats and birds in the evening. You might even catch sight of a cormorant fishing the large carp.
Being on Sustrans 24 means you can walk into Bath through the Two Tunnels or even cycle and there are endless walks around. You can walk to the 2 local pubs within 15 mins..and other further away.
Beng on 12 minutes from Bath means there is no excuse not to visit all the historic beauties but many guests find they just love the peace and quiet at Tucking Mill.
Close by there is the lovely National Trust garden of Prior Park, and going in the opposite direction, the Saxon village of Bradford on Avon, the film location of Lacock (Harry Potter, Mansfield Park amongst many others) and even Stone Henge is within 45 minutes drive.
For the children, Longleat with its fabulous animals and lovely house is only 20 minutes distant. And don’t forget Wookey Hole…where a significant discount is available through the Bath Reward Card
